EL SALADO ESTUARY IN PUERTO VALLARTA

 

Aside from being a spectacular beach destination, Puerto Vallarta is also a great place to learn everything from the flora and fauna of the Mexican rainforest. El Salado Estuary is a protected area, home to several animals and plants protected by the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources. This is estuary is unique, because it is located in the middle of the city.

 

This place protects the mangroves and marshes, as well as various aquatic specimens and forest vegetation. It is permanently connected to the Pacific Ocean by a channel that ends into the bay. Making it the perfect ecosystem for mammals, reptiles and birds.

 

Experts have identified over 100 species of birds, 29 amphibians and reptiles and 10 species of mammals. You will see the green iguana, the garrobo and the river crocodiles, other animals you can observe are racoons and opossums; you can also see fiddler crabs and stone crabs.

 

You can visit this incredible place every day (except for Sundays). Tours are led by a biologist that will explain to you every detail about the animals and plants that live in this place. You will get super close to crocodiles!

 

At the end of the visit you will have the chance to see the whole place from an observation tower. The tour has a duration of two hours and is offered three times a day.
